LATEST NEWS

This page gives amendments and additions to the published details. The page numbers relate to the guidebook.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

The route of The Smugglers’ Way south of Brown Gelly has been re-routed. One of the landowners, whose land does not come under the provisions of the Countryside and Rights of Way Act, has made it clear that he does not want walkers to pass through. He keeps cattle, including bulls, on his land and he cites the risk of injury to walkers and subsequent litigation as his reasons.

There is a very acceptable alternative, entirely on Rights of Way, which adds 0.3 miles (0.5 km) to the overall journey. Although there is a slight increase in the amount of road walking the new route takes advantage of the attractive Two Valleys Walk.

Scroll down this page to see a map showing the new route. You may print it, or alternatively send me a stamped, self-addressed envelope and I will pop a sketch map and a revised route description in the post.

Accommodation details have been updated to indicate the amended distances to Little Keasts B & B and Redgate Smithy.

The Smugglers’ Way route guide will be revised and reprinted later this year, and will include the amended route.

FS 3 February 2011

B & B accommodation at the Countryman Hotel, Camelford, has been added. (9.9.11)

Note that the signpost indicating 'St Juliet', 'Lesnewth' and 'New Mills' referred to on p 8 (southbound) and p 10 (northbound) has disappeared. Southbound walkers should head down the field, keeping the hedge on your left. Northbound walkers head up the field to the top, then take the fp to the left. (Thanks to John Pilling for the info.) (8.8.11)

The London Inn in St Neot has closed down. The nearest hostelry to Trenant is the Highwayman in Dobwalls. (31.5.11)

B & B accommodation at Higher Cannaframe Farmhouse, near Bolventor, has been added. (14.5.11)

B & B accommodation at Little Keasts B & B, just south of the Moor, added July 2010. See Transport & Accommodation page for details.

Encounter Cornwall, a local company specialising in walking holidays in the County, is including The Smugglers' Way and Saints & Smugglers in its 2011 programme. See General Info page for details.

p 5. There is no longer any B & B accommodation in Dobwalls. Alternatives are Trenant and St Neot.

Map facing p 10  Just to the south of the Dairy Crest Factory is the newly-opened Cornwall at War Museum, well worth a visit if you're walking the Way at a leisurely pace. Teas and coffees are available! It's only open during the summer - for details of entry fees and opening times click on the link: http://www.cornwallatwarmuseum.co.uk/index.html

Back Cover. The Country Code printed in the booklet has been superceded by the new Countryside Code, refer to General Info section for details. The address given for reporting problems concerning public rights of way is no longer correct, and I suggest any such problems should be reported to me in the first instance.

Route alterations:

NORTH OF THE MOOR

Please refer to IMPORTANT NOTICE above.

p 12. The bearing given for the southbound leg across the moor from the Tremail junction to Lanlavery Rock and on to the forest gate is incorrect - it should read 205°. My thanks to David James for pointing that out. (amended 13 July 08)

p 18. Several walkers have reported locked gates in the vicinity of Dozmary Pool - one on the eastern shore of the pool itself, the other at the southern end of Ten Acre Lane (marked B on map). These have been locked to control the movement of cattle, so for the time being you just have to climb over them! (added 23 May 09)

SOUTH OF THE MOOR

pp 24/25. Regrettably the footpath between Havett Farm and Dobwalls has been permanently closed as a result of the construction of the Dobwalls Bypass. It means a bit more road walking, although this incurs no greater distance. Simply follow the road shown in the guidebook past the Adventure Park (now closed for redevelopment). (amended 13 July 08)

pp 26/27. Note that the tennis court adjacent to Scawn Mill has been replaced by a log pile! (added 9 Sept 11)

pp 28/29. Not so much an alteration as a word of caution: the footpath sign near the Ford shown on the map points up the lane. Follow the lane for only a few yards, then turn right into the field to follow the riverside path, as indicated on the map. Several walkers report that they have followed the sign up the lane, and then had to come all the way back down again. (added 22 June 10)
